5 tips to wear black in the summer

Written By The Style Whisperer for THE DESIGN COLLECTIVE

Summer, the season of heat, comes with its own set of challenges. While spending hours lounging on the beach in a breezy ensemble is definitely a perk, wearing dark tones in the scorching sun can be stifling. As black is a colour that absorbs heat, during this weather people tend to avoid it. But for those who love this dark shade, it may seem like a season of disappointment.

What if we told you that there was a way to pull off black this summer? Although your instincts may tell you otherwise, trust us–there are multiple ways to wear this gorgeous colour, despite the sunny weather. Take a look at our style guide for tips on how to incorporate noire in your looks without heat getting in the way.

Tip 1: In the evening

While wearing dark shades when the sun is still out can cause excessive sweating, the rules change at night. As the air becomes just a tad bit cooler after sunset, feel free to put on your favourite tops, dresses and jumpsuits in this forever-favourite shade.

Tip 2: Lighter, natural fabrics

To get through this season, the fabric is key. Don’t wear black unless the outfit has been created using breathable natural fabrics such as linen, silk or cotton. These will keep you cool, even if you’re dressed in head-to-toe black.

Tip 3: Fluid silhouettes

In the summer, stay away from form-fitting silhouettes and instead choose wider ones that don’t stick close to the body. This will ensure that the outfit allows for maximum air flow and remains comfortable for a long period of time.

Tip 4: Mix it with prints and patterns

Embrace the versatility of this classic value and style with the latest summer trends. Mix and match the shade with brighter hues and various kinds of prints. Florals, paisley and stripes will break the rigidity of the black outfit and give it a summer refresh.

Tip 5: Accessorize it

The easiest way to ensure your all-black outfit looks like summer is to combine it with some seasonal staples. We are talking about straw hats, floral scarves, chic totes and sandals. Add on a pair of cool sunglasses and colourful jewellery to make your look summer-ready.
