Brands that bring new life into fabrics

Posted in

Sustainability is one of the most important movements in the world right now. And the fashion industry is definitely responding to it. From embracing new, innovative textiles to promoting ethical practices, there are many changes brands and designers are working towards. However, one of the most creative ones has to be upcycling. The term refers to reusing existing material to make something new–including old clothes and deadstock textiles. Many brands use various techniques to breathe new life into scraps of fabrics to turn them into pieces that aren’t just sustainable, but equally fashionable.

From luxury designers like Alexander McQueen to Marine Serre, many industry trendsetters have adopted the practice. And our local designers and brands are not immune. They too are changing the industry by creating unique, eye-catching upcycled collections that you’ll want to bring home. Below are some of our favorite TDC designers who turn the old into new.

Nåd

Focusing on the smoothness and style of movement through silhouette, fabric and accessories, Nåd is a brand that translates to ‘grace’ in English. Their Scandinavian philosophy of mixing simplicity with minimalism, the brand believes in zero waste design wherein they use deadstock fabric to create contemporary styles.

Mint Ceylon

Founded by three sisters, this brand uses both ethically sourced raw materials and upcycled textiles to create beautifully crafted products. More than just minimizing waste, the brand seeks to help create jobs for locals to support and empower communities. From candles to free-flowing kaftans, Mint Ceylon’s collection includes some truly unique pieces.

House of Lonali

House of Lonali uses pre-consumer fabric discards and turns them into original, effortless garments and lifestyle products. Founded by Lonali Rodrigo in 2012, the brand believes in slow fashion. From their chic dresses to their fun, eclectic shoes, each of their products helps customers upgrade their style–sustainably.

Sustainableee

The name of the brand aptly represents its aim, which is to promote locally sourced sustainable products. Their collection includes a collection of eco-friendly products made by local vendors, who create innovative, upcycled items and sustainable alternatives. They reduce environmental waste while simultaneously supporting social empowerment. From notebooks to saree bags, you’ll love their curation of products.

Original Source & Supply

Born from a passion for travel and discovery of new crafts and cultures, the products and practices of Original Source & Supply reflect the same. They believe in using conscious sourcing and thoughtful development to make products in small quantities. The brand uses illustrations as a medium to showcase experiences, each printed on cards and textiles. In their endeavor to reduce waste, they look for creative ways to reuse cut-offs. For their products, they buy fabrics in small quantities and make a limited number of pieces for each print. These fabrics are either fabric excess or rejects–leading to a zero waste cycle.
