Bringing art into your wardrobe

Written by AMULYA MISRA for THE DESIGN COLLECTIVE

While art and fashion may not be words that are commonly linked together, their collision is inevitable. Art is a form of self-expression, and so is fashion. For centuries, these two concepts have been merged together to create some gorgeous fashionable works of art.

From Elsa Schiaparelli being inspired by the paintings of Salvador Dalí to Versace embracing Andy Warhol’s pop prints, time and again the lines between fashion and art have been blurred. And it’s not just couture designers making this bold choice. Colourful prints, intricate embroidery and bold silhouettes are just some of the ways young designers are experimenting with art-inspired fashion.

If you’re to inject a little art into your closet, then we have recommendations for you to pick from.

Art as prints

Fashion is an easy tool to use to tell stories. Whether you’re choosing to wear a particular print or  simply styling an outfit, each decision speaks for your personality. As the impact of a simple print can be vast, we recommend you choose your garments carefully so that they speak for themselves.

Minal Naomi of Ethno chooses to express her love for fashion and art through her one-of-a-kind printed t-shirts. Similarly, Udarika Dalugama takes surrealist ideas and adds a touch of fashion to create conceptual printed garments. Bringing an explosion of bold colours into stylish pieces, GAI By Gayanth Karunarathne features whimsical prints and eclectic designs that will leave you wanting more.

Art as shapes

From sketching a garment on paper to cutting out the patterns, there is an art to every single step of the design process. However, when fashion designers decide to take that art a step further, magic is created on and off the runway.

Amilani Perera’s preference for out-of-the-box shapes is quite visible in her designs. She loves to play around with silhouettes and shapes. Unlike Perera, Dimuthu Sahabandu is all about the detailing. Using unique textile techniques and intricate detailing, he manages to create truly exceptional pieces that are loved by all.

Art-inspired accessories

When you are looking to incorporate art into your wardrobe, you must not forget your accessories. Handbags, earrings and other accessories not only complete your look but also gives it an added artistic edge.

The handcrafted accessories brand, Swarang weaves the genius of indigenous art with the contemporary sensibilities of design. It’s an easy and fun way to add a little art into any look. The knitted bags of Hobo Beautiful are timeless, ethically produced and sustainable. Statement art-themed jewellery has been trending for a while now. De’Anma’s Ikuri ring is very unique and versatile as it can be styled for casual outfits and fancy galas just as easily. If fun is what you seek, then earrings from Olive Yu, inspired by the fortune cookie will serve you well.
