Explore the art of upcycling with Mint Ceylon

There was a time when things were invented to last as long as possible. However as centuries passed, people started to make cheaper, less durable goods that were meant to be thrown away in the name of commercialization. This practice led to an overwhelming amount of waste being created. We are all aware of the detrimental effect of the fashion industry on the planet, especially due to fast fashion being created as a use-and-throw affordable alternative.

To counter the effects, many companies and brands are turning waste into something new. The process of transforming wasted or discarded parts into a new product is called upcycling. As people often say: “Waste isn’t waste until it is wasted.” Using even the smallest fabrics or leather cutoffs, you can create a completely new yet stylish product. The art of upcycling provides many benefits to the environment–it increases the life cycle of a product, it reduces waste in the landfill and is a circular way of living. 

Mint Ceylon is a Sri Lanka-based brand that uses this practice to create beautiful products. Using recycled fabrics and ethically sourced raw materials, the brand designs bags, footwear, clothes and candles. The brand was started by three sisters in 2020, with the simple goal to repurpose materials. “We knew the huge waste problem in the fashion industry had to be addressed. The amount of fabrics that go to waste each year was astonishing! We established our goal and started working,” say the founders.

The trio work with local artisans and communities to create products with minimal fabric wastage. Any excess fabric left behind is used to create smaller products such as pouches, scarves, scrunchies and more. The designs of this thoughtful fashion brand prove that upcycling is an art and is definitely fashionable.
