Five ways to make your closet more sustainable

Posted in

It’s 2022 and the world as we know it is a little more greener and a lot more thoughtful. The movement towards sustainable fashion continues to grow as brands experiment with new innovative textiles, waste-free production practices and ethical processes. And all of this is in part due to a changing consumer sentiment which demands sustainability.

If you’re attempting to rework your lifestyle and wardrobe to be a lot more sustainable, then you’re not alone. Many people are making conscious, more thoughtful choices everyday to support this movement towards a greener, healthier future. However, even the thought of curating a wardrobe that’s sustainable and ethical can be quite daunting. But don’t worry, we have some tips for you which will make your wardrobe more sustainable.

  1. Wash your clothes less

Did you know that every time you put in a load of laundry or wash your clothes by hand it negatively impacts the environment? Synthetic fabrics shed thousands of plastic particles while being washed, contaminating our waterways. Moreover, the detergents being used contain chemicals which can further harm the planet. Reducing your wash cycle from every wear to 2-3 wears will help the environment.

2. Organize your closet

It might not seem like it, but organising your closet can actually help you make greener choices. Being able to see what pieces you have in your wardrobe can stir up your creative juices and let out your inner stylist. Invent new ensembles, play with silhouettes and have fun with the pieces you have to ensure you’re making the most of your garments and accessories. This will make them last longer and help you shop less.

3. Check the labels

Always, always, always carefully read the label while shopping. When it comes to shopping for clothes and accessories, the most eco-friendly behaviour means you know exactly where your clothes come from and who created them. It’ll also help you keep a close eye on the materials being used to create your garments–we recommend you opt for natural textiles like cotton, linen, silk and others.

4. Repair before you discard

Is there a hole in your jeans, a small rip in your favourite shirt or some threads have unravelled in your favourite scarf? Now before you go and throw away the garment, make a conscious decision to repair it. When it comes to tears and rips, you can easily mend it in fun, creative ways. This will increase the garment’s life and ensure it doesn’t end up in the landfill before its time.

5. Shop from sustainable brands

Everyone deserves a little TLC. And if your idea of a good time and self-love is shopping, then we don’t blame you. However when you’re buying something new, one of the biggest ways you can help the planet simultaneously is by ensuring you pick sustainable brands. From bigger brands who are starting to change their values to smaller ones who are built on sustainability alone, you’ll find plenty of options these days. We recommend some of our favourites from our Sustainable Edit like House of Lonali, NAD and ITR.
