How to Take Care of your Jewellery

Written by IMESHA GAJAWEERA Founder of PABORA

So you have invested in some bling and want know how to look after it? You have come to the right place. Set out below are our Top Tips for taking care of all your jewellery. Following these simple rules and you and your favourite chain/hoop earrings/engagement ring will have many happy years ahead!

How to store it:

  • Remove it before you perform any sports. That includes going to the gym.
  • Gently clean your jewellery with a soft, clean cloth to maximize the shine.
  • Sort out your jewellery whether it is imitation, pearl, gold, and silver so that you can use different methods for cleaning them.
  • Store them separately – not jumbled together in one big pot or drawer. At a minimum, keep pearls in a different bag or box BUT make sure the storage bag/box is not too dry and not airtight.
  • A good way to store jewellery is in zip or drawstring purses.
  • Ideally, jewellery should be stored on a soft cloth like chintz, velvet or cotton. Avoid linen, net, georgette and jersey. This is the best way to protect your jewellery from external elements. If not, you can also put them in wooden boxes, their walls lined with foam and lay them on soft cotton wool.
  • Keep your chains clasped to keep them from getting tangled.
  • Ask our support to inspect your jewellery for any damage.
  • Keep sharp jewellery separate lest it scratch other items.

Polish and clean:

  • Use silver ‘dip’ type cleaners for cleaning silver jewellery but don’t leave your jewellery in the dip for more than a few seconds. Make sure you dry it properly post cleaning.
  • Regularly polish your platinum and silver jewellery to avoid tarnishing. Ideally weekly or at least once a month.
  • Gemstone jewellery needs to be taken extra care of, and you can do this by cleaning it with a soft brush and mild soapy water. Alternatively use specialist jewellery cleaning solution.
  • Clean your antique jewellery only with the advice of a specialist or you risk ruining it. Don’t take it near things that are high in acidity or chemical.

What to avoid:

  • Try not to expose your jewellery to everyday chemicals such as hair products, cosmetics, perfumes, or direct sunlight, as they are likely to damage them. Keep them away from vinegar, lemon and acidic foods as well.
  • Avoid getting beaded or threaded pearl jewellery wet, they may lose their sheen.
  • Simply wipe them with a soft damp cloth if they are exposed to cosmetics or perfume.
  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners on jewellery.
  • Don’t use silver ‘dip’ cleaners on gold jewellery.
  • Make use of jewellery cleaners intended solely for the purpose of cleaning gold.
  • Do not try to clean damaged jewellery, the problem can get worse.
