Introducing NELU, the newest wanderlust-inspired collection of Nåd

Written By The Style Whisperer for THE DESIGN COLLECTIVE

With a name that translates to ‘grace’ in English, Nåd is a sustainable womenswear brand with a Scandinavian aesthetic. Launched by designer Joanne Stoker, the brand focuses on the smoothness of movement through silhouette, fabric and accessories. Fusing minimalism with tropical influences, the garments are designed to keep the comfort of women in mind.

With voluminous silhouettes that promote easy-wearing, her garments are made using lightweight breathable natural fabrics in cotton poplin, jersey and fine linens. But the best part is, as the brand believes in zero waste, the textiles it works with are mainly deadstock, which is then upcycled into contemporary sartorial styles.

Nåd’s commitment to sustainable fashion includes protecting the local heritage crafts and textiles of Sri Lanka, promoting ethical practices and empowering native craftswomen by offering empowerment opportunities.

About The Designer

Joanne first moved to Colombo from London in 2016 in search of a more holistic lifestyle. When she first visited Sri Lanka in 2013, she instantly fell in love with the island and decided to move here. Therefore, when she was appointed the head of the fashion design and textile department at the Academy Of Design (AOD) in the capital, she instantly took up the offer. Greatly inspired by her vibrant surroundings, they became an essential part of what forms her design aesthetic today.

“With the heritage craft and domestic manufacturing skills Sri Lanka has to offer, it really is the perfect place to develop a brand. Sri Lanka offers a lot of scope for sustainable practice and ethical growth, in terms of labour. It’s important that a new brand focuses on design sustainability,” she says.

NELU: The New Collection

From the sweeping wild plains of the hill country to the dry leopard trails of Yala at sunset, NELU is a collection that has been inspired by the wanderlust that awaits.

The hues and prints act as a reflection of visual memories that ignite one’s imagination to travel once more. The collection pays homage to Paul Gauguin, the designer’s favourite artist. The silhouettes are inspired by his female portraits and the use of tropical earthy tones within his exotic paintings.
