Things You’ll Buy In Sri Lanka That You’ll Treasure Forever

It’s time to go souvenir shopping in Sri Lanka

I never come back from a holiday without a souvenir. It’s a habit I picked up while travelling as a child with my parents. And it’s something I carry forward to this day. As important as a trip may be, souvenir shopping is equally essential.

But let me be honest, there are some keepsakes that are destined to find a home in the back of my closet. Others become part of my everyday life, bringing memories of a place, a scent, or the food long after the holiday is over.

Sri Lanka is particularly good at the latter. Its local design scene draws from gemstones, batik, botanicals, spices and centuries-old craft traditions. It gives visitors plenty to take home beyond the usual fridge magnet (although those are pretty awesome too!)

Below, you’ll find our edit of the island-made pieces actually worth making room in your enormous suitcase for.

Incense Sticks By The Soulful Collective

Take home a little of Sri Lanka’s slower pace with incense from The Soulful Collective, a holistic lifestyle and wellness brand founded in 2023. Its cedarwood incense has a warm, woofy character that makes a strong case for turning your evening routine into something more curated.

Handcrafted in Sri Lanka, it is the sort of small purchase that keeps a holiday memory alive through scent. Choose between cedarwood, saffron, sage, frankincense, oudh or cinnamon–and don’t forget to take a few for your friends and family!

Sri Lankan Gemstones By Nimansé

As you may (and should) already know, Sri Lanka has the best gemstones. So, jewellery is one souvenir category where going local really pays off. Nimansé brings a contemporary perspective to the island’s natural treasures, pairing handcrafted silver with ethically sourced semi-precious stones.

The pieces are designed to transition easily from daytime expeditions to intimate dinner dates. This makes these less of a holiday trinket, and more of an investment.

PS. If you’re looking for something personal, the studio also offers bespoke designs.

Birthstone Jewels by Aviika

For a souvenir that feels uniquely yours, take a look at Aviika’s contemporary designs. Its latest collection takes inspiration from Sri Lanka’s vast landscapes and ocean surroundings, translating the island into a series of twelve birthstones.

A pendant or pair of ear studs becomes more than a pretty accessory when it represents your birth month. What’s more, this is the kind of jewellery you’ll pass down in your family for generations.

Think of it like wearing a tiny piece of paradise, without paying for extra baggage.

Batik Designs by Swanee

Sri Lankan batik deserves more attention than a casual holiday purchase. Swanee continues a remarkable family artistic legacy inspired by the work of modernist painter Swanee Jayawardene, who helped elevate fabric and batik into an art form.

The result is a reminder that Sri Lankan craft can be bold and experimental. Not to mention thoroughly modern.

This is a souvenir for anyone who wants to bring home something with a story they can share at a dinner party.

Bathcare by That Brown Bark

Cold-processed soaps may not sound like the most glamorous souvenir (and let’s be honest, they seem like a copout gift as well), that is until you discover That Brown Bark’s collection.

The Colombo-based artisan brand creates small-batch soaps using natural oils, clays, botanicals and herbal ingredients.

Take home a cinnamon candle, body scrub or foot soak and suddenly your post-holiday bathroom has its own little Sri Lankan universe.

Kitchen Essentials by Oma Ceylon

If there’s one thing your kitchen back home is missing, its Sri Lanka’s wonderful spices.

Turmeric, Ceylon cinnamon, black pepper and vanilla appear across its wellness and lifestyle collection turning ingredients that are intrinsic to the island’s culture into modern everyday rituals.
