Draping Six Yards of Fabric (Saree) Stylishly

Written by AMULYA MISRA for THE DESIGN COLLECTIVE

The saree is considered to be amongst the oldest form of garments in the world, with over five thousand years of traceable history. The oldest literature composed by mankind, the Vedas, mention this long-lasting drape and records from the Indus Valley Civilization confirm its existence as well. The saree is said to have evolved from a three piece unstitched attire consisting of drapes along the waist, the chest and the shoulder.

Yet, being an ancient garment has in no way stifled its popularity. From being featured in runway shows to being spotted in the streets of rural and urban areas, the saree continues to be an integral part of South Asian history. It is as entrenched in its culture as it was centuries ago. Be it young millennials or their grandmother’s, sarees still occupies a staple place in the wardrobes of women. The draping of a saree is often seen as a form of art in asian circles, passed on from generation to generation. With its long lineage, it’s no wonder that the six yard drape has gone through changes in its style of draping, the design and the fabric in order to keep up with fashion.

The Indian Drape

Even though the world is evolving and taking the classic drape along with it, the need for traditional sarees remains consistent. Rooted in history, one such company stays true to the art of handloom and pays homage to it. Traditional weaving and dyeing art of pethanpilli, commonly known as ikat, has been incorporated in these draped hand-made masterpieces by STHRI by Selyn.

The Digital Touch

Just as art moved into the digital age with the invention of technology and computers, so did the saree. Digital textile printing started in the late 1980s as a replacement for analog screen printing. As technology became more popular, designers turned to this new media to express their creativity. Leekoh is one such brand that has taken on the challenge to produce designer wear sarees with a customised digital print. The subtle glamour with an added touch of feminine flair struck the perfect balance between technology and tradition.

The Modern Pairing

From hard-working women in the isolated fields to high-level corporate employees, the saree has been a staple garment in the lives of working women everywhere. With western motifs making their way into the East, it doesn’t come as a surprise when this traditional drape was given a western twist by Amilani Perera. While incorporating signature Sri Lankan motifs in her collection, the designer made a bold statement by pairing the lace saree with a contemporary shirt-blouse.

The Silhouette Twist

The saree has undergone several transformations through the years, but perhaps none as unique as that done by BäLa. Retaining the old world charm of Indian sarees into contemporary silhouettes and designs, the label gave a fresh new take on the classic drape. Pairing the shoulder saree drape with a stretchable tube top and wide-leg pants, the ready-to-wear outfit oozed luxury and comfort.
