LEEKOH: Fashion, Gaudi and the Sagrada Família

Written by THARUSHI GUNARATNE for THE DESIGN COLLECTIVE

When you think about Gaudi you think about the multi chromatic, light, almost magical and impossible structures. It is like looking through a kaleidoscope of a wonderful world of natural fractals.

CFW emerging designer Achala Leekoh was inspired by the art nouveau movement and one of the most remarkable built structures of the late Antoni Gaudi– the Sagrada Familia. The geometry of the intricate details which are layered against the skyline has inspired the construction and volume of this collection.

Looking a little bit into the history of the building, the construction of the Sagrada Família began in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1883, when Villar resigned, Gaudí took over as chief architect, transforming the project with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudí devoted the remainder of his life to the project, and he is buried in the crypt. At the time of his death in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete.

The steeples on the Nativity façade are crowned with geometrically shaped tops that are reminiscent of Cubism, and the intricate decoration is contemporary to the style of Art Nouveau, but Gaudí’s unique style drew primarily from nature, not other artists or architects, and resists categorisation.

In LEEKOHS collection you can see her exploring Gaudi’s fractals and details and implementing them through precise structural pieces defined by geometry illustrations. She has promoted her concept “exclusive prints with a conscience”; in which she steers away from traditional water-based printing due to its negative impact on the environment and instead uses digitized printing processes which have minimal to no waste residue.

She presented a luxury collection using a monochrome base with accent colours of yellow, red and blue. The pleats featured in this collection which was inspired by Gaudi and the Sagrada Familia. The surface prints are mainly rooted and inspired by the windows of the cathedral in an unfinished element which is iconic to the Gaudi’s masterpiece and the infamous spiralling stairwell has inspired the beautiful pleating details throughout the collection.
