Chakras & Fashion – Your guide to a perfect balance

Written by THARUSHI GUNARATNE for THE DESIGN COLLECTIVE

Chakras have been firmly rooted in the realms of the new age spirituality, thanks to the growing popularity of mindful and well-being practices such as yoga and meditation. Chakras regulate all parts of our bodies as they run through our internal systems and affect us physically, spiritually and emotionally. They relate to our energy, inner life force and aura, making it a doorway to our mental health.

We have seven chakras that start at the base of the spine and rise to the crown of our head. Each of them are associated with a specific colour thereby forming a connection to personal style and fashion. Colour has always been an essential part of fashion, and people dress based on their mood. For example, if you’re feeling down you wear black, if you’re in a happier mood you would automatically go for a brighter colour.

The Crown Chakra

Located at the top centre of the head and midline above the ears, brain, nervous system, and pineal gland; the highest chakra represents our ability to fully connect spiritually. This chakra creates a balanced feeling of bliss, wisdom, consciousness, awareness, connectedness, peace, understanding your spirituality and your place in the world.

The colour Violet is associated with this chakra and is often worn by royalty. Therefore Violet is perceived as luxurious and sophisticated. The colour combined with the Crown Chakra can help in making a difficult decision and connecting with your inner most thoughts.

The Third-Eye

The Third-eye Chakra is located between the eyebrows. This chakra is known to help you be in tune with your intuition, imaginative creativity, clarity, vision, manifestation, inner wisdom, and visualisation.

It is associated with Indigo and stimulates the right brain, giving you the ability to focus and see the bigger picture while expanding your imagination. Creatives seek this colour to excite their creative skills and help with concentration.

The Throat Chakra

Located on the level of the throat, this chakra allows you to express yourself in an authentic and genuine way. The colour blue takes on promoting both physical and mental relaxation; it’s a colour that seeks peace and tranquility.

As it is associated with the throat, this chakra aids in verbal expressions. Blue produces calmness and since it’s so commonly used, it symbolises leadership and confidence as it exudes power. It’s recommended to wear blue to job interviews and other fields of authority.

The Heart Chakra

Hovering around our heart and circulatory system, this chakra is known to be one of the most important. It connects with our feelings of unconditional love, receptiveness, peace, compassion, gratitude and forgiveness. Connect with this chakra to heal your inner soul and empower your emotional well-being.

Green is the colour associated with it for balance and growth. It calms and relaxes you, and when worn, it can give perspective. Wear green to feel grounded and calm in situations where you need it.

The Solar Plexus

This chakra is in the upper abdomen. It better enables you to maintain your inner strength and to protect your emotional energy. The Solar Plexus is a source of personal power and can also be thought of as your inner fire, fuelling your confidence and motivating you to stay strong and resilient. This one is all about you!

Associated with the colour yellow it inspires original thought and inquisitiveness. It’s known to be the colour of new ideas. It can awakens confidence and optimism. Being the most visible colour, when worn it  makes you feel happier and maintains your mental alertness.

The Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra helps us connect with new experiences. Located right under the naval in our lower abdomen, this chakra is all about pleasure, sexuality and passion. As we explore and connect with this chakra, we’re able to identify ourselves emotionally.

Wearing orange will influence the power of this chakra as it represents warmth and happiness that combines the physical energy and stimulation of red with the cheerfulness of yellow. It inspires you to express and enjoy yourself in previously undiscovered ways.

The Root Chakra

Located at the base of the spine, it rounds out all the chakras by representing our foundation and the sense of feeling grounded. This chakra also encourages a connection between the mind, body and Mother Earth. Dealing with our physical identity, when balanced, it gives you a feeling of being safe, secure, centred, stable, structured and connected.

The root chakra is enhanced by wearing the red. It is a colour of strength and when worn can show assertiveness and boost energy, as well as exude sexuality.
