The fresh decadent smell of chocolate is in the air and flower shops are sprucing up their stalls as we rapidly approach the most romantic day of the year–February 14th aka Valentine’s Day.
Have you ever wondered how this day of celebrating love came to be? The origins of this day are shrouded in mystery as there are many different stories associated with it. However, one of the most commonly believed legends and perhaps the most romantic one is that of the imprisoned Saint Valentine who was sent to jail for marrying young lovers in secret after Emperor Claudius II decreed that single men were better suited as soldiers than as husbands. While in jail, he sent the first ‘valentine’ to a girl he fell in love with.
This honest expression of love gave birth to a holiday that is celebrated by millions of people around the world. People eagerly await this day–from individuals confessing to hidden love or partners bestowing an extra dose of affection on their loved ones, it’s a day to bask in love for all.
While flowers and candy are always welcome, why not celebrate this upcoming holiday with an added pinch of affection and thoughtfulness? If you’re looking to up your gift-giving game this year, we have some suggestions that may come in handy.
For those who are always stylish:
Fashion-forward additions to a wardrobe are always welcome. Gifting apparel can be a great way to show that you understand your loved ones style, personality and wants.
Women: Effortlessly casual jumpsuits by Desu, statement pieces by Alejandra Dominguez, sensual dresses by Nakota Tuwa, we have everything a girl can want in her wardrobe and more.
Men: Quirky shirts make the great conversation starters and GAI’s printed shirts speak for themselves. For a casual island-vibe we recommended shirts by The Three by TPV and for date nights we favour shirts by Flax Farmer.
For those who treasure jewellery
Everyone knows that the fastest way to a person’s heart is through food, but a close second is jewellery. This is especially true when it comes to Valentine’s Day.
Women: Nothing completes an outfit like the right accessories. If you’re hunting for a statement ring, we suggest you turn to Olive Yu for inspiration. For fans of minimalism, Kudya and Aaryaa are our to-go brands.
For those who love decorating their homes:
While home decoration pieces may seem like an odd gift choice to some–trust us, sometimes they make for the perfect presents. 2020 taught us the importance of creating a space at home that is safe, warm and comfortable. If you’ve decided to indulge and opt for practical gifts for the home, peek through our suggestions.
Women & Men: Whether you decide to add a pop of colour to your home decor with cushions by Isle by Rataa, seek out candles to relax at home or simply need a new vase to put those beautiful flowers in, gifting home decor is a unique way to express your affection on this holiday.
For those who want to feel their best:
During a time when tensions are still on the rise, many people may opt to spend the day relaxing with their partners. While massage places and salons may not be the safest option right now, at-home skincare treatments are our recommendations.
Women & Men: Couple spa-sessions are some of the most sought after gifts this time of the year. Add your own twist to this year and bring the salon home (with a bottle of wine) to celebrate your mutual love for each other and relaxation.
